Founded in 1959 in Yakima, Washington, DH Construction & Development, Inc. has been a trusted leader in custom home construction and residential development throughout Central Washington for more than six decades. What began as a family construction business under Tom Hughes has grown into one of the region’s most respected home builders, known for quality craftsmanship, integrity, and long-term value.
From our headquarters in Yakima, DH Construction has built over 500 custom and semi-custom homes across the Yakima Valley, along the Interstate 82 corridor, and throughout the Columbia Basin. Our homes are widely recognized as some of the most prestigious residences in Central Washington, reflecting our commitment to superior design, durable construction, and customer satisfaction.
In 2014, longtime President Doug Hughes began planning for the future of DH Construction as he transitioned from full-time construction leadership. With a focus on preserving the company’s legacy, Doug carefully selected three partners to assume ownership—each chosen for their proven experience, ethics, and leadership within the construction industry.
Family ownership continues through Dereck Nelson, Doug’s son-in-law, who has been with DH Construction since 2003. Dereck has held multiple roles including Carpenter, Service Manager, and Project Manager, and now leads Sales and Customer Relations, guiding clients through the custom home building process from concept to completion.
Joining Dereck in ownership are Darin Lorton and Michael Wagner. Darin brings more than 20 years of framing and production experience as a longtime contractor with Kingdom Quality Construction, adding deep field expertise and efficiency to every project. Michael Wagner, DH Construction’s Business and Finance Manager, combines a strong background in accounting and construction management to ensure projects remain on schedule and within budget.
Today, DH Construction & Development, Inc. continues to serve homeowners across Yakima and Central Washington with a commitment to excellence, transparency, and building homes designed to last for generations.
